Houston Shine Goes
to Washington

On August 15, Houston Shine will participate in the first-ever tournament of Afghan women soccer players in America. Help support our journey to Washington, DC!

Fundraising Goal $10,000

About the Tournament

The tournament is hosted by The Tawana, a non-profit organization for Afghan women's sports in the U.S. Small-sided games will be held at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland on August 15. The event coincides with the 5-year anniversary of the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Afghan women soccer players resettled across the East Coast, Midwest, and Texas are traveling to the DC area to play. Many have not seen each other since they were evacuated five years ago.

To be part of this special event, Houston Shine is raising money and recruiting host families to make our team's travel possible.

Support the Team's Journey

Our players are recently arrived refugees, many of them living on their own in their early 20s, while also supporting their families in Afghanistan. They are contributing to part of the costs of the trip, but they need support. Donate below or check out our wish list to help with equipment needs directly.

Become a Host Family

We're looking for a small group of host families in the Montgomery County area who can offer a safe and welcoming home to 2 or 3 players for three nights from August 13–16. Players range in age from 14–29 and will stay in pairs or small groups. Host families will help with local transportation to and from the Metro for a day of sightseeing on Friday and to the field on Saturday. Fill out this interest form and we'll be in touch.
